SPARTA, NJ - In a collective team effort, the Sparta varsity football team defeated Ramapo in a rematch of last year’s state championship, as Sparta advances to the North 1, Group 3 State Championship game for the second year in a row. Sparta will play fourth-seeded River Dell on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Lucas Faria put forth another incredible performance, rushing for 378 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Seville helped lead the charge for Sparta, throwing for 180 yards and three touchdown passes. Teddy Fischer reeled in two, while the other was a leaping catch made by Skyler Francisco.

After leading, 26-17, at the half, Sparta started the second half with an interception on the Ramapo 2-yard line, after driving all the way down the field, which led to a Ramapo touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Sparta fumbled the ball, turning the ball right back over to Ramapo. It looked as though it could be a repeat of last year’s letdown. However, the Sparta defense was solid throughout the entire game, and made a key stop on fourth down to kill Ramapo’s momentum. Then, as Sparta was driving, they faced a crucial fourth down that could have given Ramapo excellent field position. Faria received the handoff, and was stopped at the line of scrimmage. Just when Ramapo thought they regained momentum, Faria spun out of three tackles to gain the first down.

After a Sparta touchdown, Ramapo seemed to be driving again, until Matt Schiumo blocked a pass at the line of scrimmage, miraculously falling into the hands of Kevin Foulds. From there, the Spartans never looked back. Faria and John Coleman both made their marks in the record books at Sparta High School on Saturday. Lucas Faria became the school’s all-time leading rusher, and set the record for the most rushing yards in a single season with 2,116, with one game remaining. Coleman’s three extra points made him the highest-scoring kicker in school history.
