SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School Junior Alexis Rabbitt has been honored as a Girl of Merit. She was one of ten girls in the tri-state area to receive this award. The award ceremony took place at a brunch held on Sunday, Oct 12 at the Girls World Expo in Florida, NY.
According to information published by The Girls of Merit organization, Alexis’s goal is to be a surgeon. She has begun to take steps towards that goal by planning to shadow a surgeon this summer. She made the decision to be a surgeon after her mother became gravely ill with pancreatitis in 2012.
"The surgeon saved my mom's life," Rabbitt said, "and I want to be able to do that for other people."
She is SCUBA certified and she is training to be an ocean lifeguard, eventually hoping to combine the two to become a rescue diver. Rabbitt is also involved with Habitat for Humanity, a feminist book club, knitting club and both winter and spring track.
Girls of Merit is the organization that sponsors the award program. The invitees are chosen based on their actions, activities, leadership and positive influence on others, according to information published by Girls of Merit. The girls, ages 11 through 18 have proven themselves exceptional members of the community.
