"The Firehouse 5K will be a fun way for the department to celebrate Newton Day while raising funds to replace aging gear and equipment," said Newton Firefighter Dan Finkle.

"While the race is professionally directed and well-marked course is certified and sanctioned by a nationally recognized running and racing organization, we still plan on adding our own little touches to make sure that this is a race that nobody will forget."

Finkle cited cool mists of fog spraying runners from a fire truck as well as food, prizes, and other activities as some of the unique extras that participants will enjoy.

Participants are encouraged like the Newton Fire Department Facebook page or visit Firehouse5K.com for further information and the link for online registration. Registration will also be available at Firehouse on 56 Woodside Ave the night before from 5 until 8 p.m. and race day at the starting area from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. Teams, families and those wishing to simply walk the course are welcome to participate.  Awards range from seven to 80+ and in 10 year age groups.  Young participants can win watches while winners take home prizes.
