SPARTA, NJ – This Saturday, October 3, rain or shine, the Mohawk House will be hosting the fifth annual Octoberfest, sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #26. Beginning at 2 p.m. attendees will have food, beer, soda and entertainment for a $45 donation.
In the first year there were approximately 75 attendees, according to Sparta Lt Neil Spidaletto. Each year it gets bigger. They are anticipating between 100 – 150 people this year.
“It is getting better every year thanks to Steve and Rachel Scro for everything they do throughout the year,” said Spidaletto. “Not only do thee host the Octoberfest but they help out with other events, with donations and door prizes.”
“The event has raised approximately $3000 each year,” said Spidaletto, “but it’s also growing every year.”
The Sparta FOP meet at the Sparta VFW hall on Main Street and donate some of their proceeds to make repairs to the building, including replacing the roof. In addition the FOP supports many children’s activities in Sparta; they are the primary supporter of the annual fishing contest at Station Park. They support youth and high school sports and Sparta Police Youth Division.
The FOP also provides support to fellow officers or family members who are sick or in need of help. While most of their support remains local some funds do go to meet the needs of others outside of Sparta, and even beyond New Jersey.
In addition to the food and drinks, there will be a 50-50, a couple of good natured games and music provided by DJ Party King. Lt Spidaletto said, “Ronnie and Dana help with all of our events. They do a great job for us.”
The threat of bad weather will not deter the FOP from having the Octoberfest. “Steve and Rachel will be sure we have a place inside [the Mohawk House],” said Spidaletto.
