SPARTA, NJ – Sparta Recreation Committee held their annual Trout Derby for the township’s children.  Sponsored by the local FOP, more than 60 children turned out to try their hand at fishing at the pond in Station Park.

The pond had been stocked by Trout Unlimited and several members of the organization were at the derby to help the children learn about fishing from how to cast to baiting hooks.

The Recreation Committee also had drawings for a fishing starter kit with rod and reel and more.

Children were accompanied by parents and grandparents.  They were equipped with traditional poles and Barbie poles and everything in between.

One of the most successful anglers of the day was a young lady who sat in a chair reading, letting her lure do the work.  She caught several fish with her patience strategy.

The committee collected food for the Sparta Ecumenical Food Pantry.
