SPARTA, NJ — The Sparta Board of Education has, once again, sworn in Karen Scott as the newest member.  Scott had resigned her seat last February with 11 months left in her term.

The board of education members posted the open seat, reviewed applications, held interviews and selected Jennifer Hamilton to fill the vacancy.

In May, board member Linda Curcio announced she was resigning as of June 1 because she was moving.  Once again the board members went through the process of selecting someone to fill Curcio’s seat for the remainder of the year.

There were three applicants. The board members chose Karen Scott, chorus teacher at Pope John XXIII High School and former Sparta chorus teacher. Scott has served on the board of education for a number of terms, though not consecutive.

The seats occupied by Hamilton and Scott will both be on the November 7 ballot. Board member Jack Surdoval’s term is also expiring this year. Nominating petitions for interested candidates are required to be submitted the Sussex County Clerk’s office by 4 p.m. on July 31.
