Arrest Made in Boating Accident: Victim Released from Hospital

SPARTA. NJ - Alex Majors, a 21-year-old Sparta man, was arrested after an investigation by state police and Sparta police into the boating accident on Lake Mohawk early Sunday morning.

Majors was charged with crashing the boat he was piloting into a pontoon boat and leaving the scene. The boat Majors was driving is registered to is father, Richard Majors. Alex Majors was remanded to Keogh-Dwyer Correctional facility in Newton. 

At 12:50 a.m. on Sunday 23-year-old twin sisters, Brianna and Alexa Reigstad, the daughters of the Sparta Township Chief of Police Ernest Reigstad and his wife Cindy, were on their family’s boat with two other friends when they were struck by an 18-foot Hurricane fiberglass boat. Both women were ejected out of the boat by the impact.  Alexis was knocked unconscious as a result and slipped beneath the surface. Brianna was able to locate her sister in the dark and bring her to the surface.

Alexa was airlifted to the Morristown Medical Center where she was treated for a laceration to her head, contusions and treatment for a near drowning episode. She was released from the hospital earlier today and is home recuperating. Brianna was also transported to Morristown where she was treated for contusions and trauma. She was released later Sunday morning.

Chief Reigstad said he would like to acknowledge and commend The New Jersey State Police, the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department, members of the Ogdensburg Police Department and the officers under his command for their professionalism. The chief and his wife Cindy also expressed "profound appreciation" to the members of the Sparta Ambulance Squad and the citizens of Sparta for their outpouring of concern, well wishes and prayers for their daughters.

Brianna and Alexa are 2110 graduates from Pope John XXIII Regional High School and 2014 graduates of the University of Scranton. Alexa is employed as a nurse at Morristown Medical  Center and is a volunteer for the Sparta Ambulance Squad. Brianna is a Third Grade Teacher at the Mohawk Avenue School here in Sparta. Their mother is a Health and Physical Education Teacher at the Sparta Middle School.

The New Jersey State Police Marine Unit has jurisdiction of all marine related incidents and as such they are the Lead Investigating Agency in this matter.

Sparta Police: Traffic Stop Ends in Pot Arrest

SPARTA, NJ – A man from Ogdensburg is facing pot charges after a traffic stop on April 4 around 11 p.m. Police Office Thomas Herd pulled over a green Honda driven by John Malone, 23 for failing to move to the right lane, police report.
