STONE TAVERN, N.J. — How does the Boyd Martin International Three Day Event sound?

For 2018, the 16th annual Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event, held May 9-13 at the Horse Park of New Jersey (HPNJ), was dominated by Martin, an Olympian who won the CCI2*, the CIC3* and the CCI3*. He rode On Cue, Kyra and Long Island T, respectively. The large cardboard display check at the awards presentation table was made out to “Boyd Martin, AGAIN.”

On Cue is a 12 year old British sporthorse mare owned by Christine Turner, who also owns Kyra, an 11 year old Canadian warmblood mare. Long Island T, a 12 year old German-bred gelding is owned by a 10 person syndicate. In addition to the major awards won, Long Island T, On Cue and Kyra also received the groom’s award for their divisions, with Kyra receiving best-conditioned. Martin went home to his Cochranville, Pa. farm with a Bates Saddles event package along with his other winnings, as the company sponsored the best-conditioned as well as the closest to optimum time awards.

Closest to optimum time awards went to Jan Byyny and Volcan de Caverie, Purcellville, Va., in the CIC2*; Mia Farley and BGS Firecracker, San Clemente, Calif. in the CCI2*, Nilson Moreira da Silva and Magnum’s Martini, Maurice, La. in the CCI 3* and Jenny Caras and Fernhill Fortitude, Marietta, Ga., in the CIC3*.

The Markham Trophy for the best U.S. Young Rider, sponsored by the U.S. Equestrian Team, went to Cornelia Dorr, Hamilton, Mass., who finished 13th on Louis M in the CCI3*.

Anna Loschiavo, Bradford, Vt., won the CIC2* on Prince Renan, a 14-year-old Holsteiner/thoroughbred cross owned by Rodney and Gina Guidici-Oakes. On her website, Loschiavo writes that Prince Renan “may have received the honor of ‘most unlikely horse to succeed at Eventing’ if there had been a vote when he first began,” but she is known for her ability to bring out the best in quirky horses. Prince Renan also received the groom’s award.

This year’s event was a qualifier for the World Equestrian Games, scheduled for September at North Carolina’s Tryon International Equestrian Center. Riders from the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland and Brazil competed. On Saturday’s cross-country day, the skies poured forth rain prior to the beginning of the competition, but there were no scratches for the Captain Mark Phillips’ designed course. Morgan Rowsell was co-designer for the 2 * courses. The morning downpour didn’t deter spectators, either, as the HPNJ parking fields were absolutely full. Sunday’s show jumping rounds were contested in the muddy conditions of the main ring. While past Jersey Fresh events have enjoyed better weather, this year’s competition did not involve any equine or human fatalities or serious injuries, as has occurred in previous years.

Two years ago, British-born rider Philippa Humphreys died after a fall on the cross-country, leaving behind her husband and young daughter, Millie. The Jersey Fresh International initiated an award in her memory for Millie’s college fund honoring the rider best emphasizing the qualities of sportsmanship. This year, the award went to Alexandra “Allie” Sacksen, of Landerberg, Pa. The award coincided with Sacksen’s first Mother’s Day as a mom. “It was really special to receive the Philippa Humphreys award. I am a new mom to a beautiful little girl, Annie, who was born on Jan. 5,” said Sacksen. “Becoming a mom changes you so much and to receive the honor of a donation in my name to go towards Millie’s college fund is incredible. I did not know [Humphreys] personally, but I feel as though in that moment I did, and to have that presented on Mothers’ Day is even more beautiful.” Sacksen rode Sparrow’s Nio in the CIC3*, finishing 26th. She plans to head to the Bromont CCI 3 * in Canada in June and then to Maryland’s Fair Hill International this fall.

The Jersey Fresh offered an array of vendors and activities. New this year was the Beer Garden overlooking the water jump and the Grand Prix ring. In the pavilion, dozens of young people participated in the Breyer model horse painting contest, a fundraiser for the 4-H National Round-up Team, raising money to compete in Kentucky in October.

HPNJ president Allyson Jeffrey, Millstone, noted that a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new footing in the Grand Prix ring was held on May 10, attended by Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher, Assemblyman Ron Dancer, Monmouth County Freehold Gerald Scharfenberger and other dignitaries. “New Jersey needs to be proud this event,” she said, adding that an even of this caliber is a real feather in the state’s cap and needs more promotion.
