SPARTA, NJ – On February 20, at approximately 1:40 a.m. police were dispatched to the 100 block of East Shore Trail for a reported minor motor vehicle accident.  Police Officer Rick Smith arrived on scene and saw that a 2014 Ford had spun and was stuck in a snowbank with substantial front end damage.

The driver, 25-year-old Matthew J. Boyle from Byram, appeared to be intoxicated to the officers on scene, but was not injured in the crash.  He was arrested for DWI and transported to Headquarters where a series of Field Sobriety Tests were administered.  This was not done at the scene of the accident due to the extreme cold.  Mr. Boyle failed these tests.

He was charged with DWI, Careless Driving and Failure To Keep Right.  He was released several hours later to a sober adult pending a court date.  Sgt. Joseph Pensado and P.O. Dan Elig assisted with the arrest.
