The speakers in attendance represent many industries and disciplines including Architecture, Construction, Finance, Health Services, Food Service, Information Technology, Science, Engineering, etc.
Each speaker has the opportunity to share a brief description of his or her career, day-to-day responsibilities, career and educational path including part time jobs and internships and future aspirations. Students had an opportunity to ask questions and engage in one-on-one conversations with the community guests. Students rotated between three panels to learn as much as possible from the day.
Jesse Jones, a Chef, told the students, “Never give up and never let anyone tell what you can't do!”
RJ Donnelly from Donnelly Industries, Green Builders and Property Developers, stated, “TEAM Charter Schools is a first rate organization that truly prepares underserved children for lifelong success. Their second annual Career Day at the Newark Collegiate Academy provided the students with access to successful professionals from a broad range of industries. The students were interested, enthusiastic and eager to learn what various career opportunities are available to them. Through TEAM Charter Schools, the students can see that the world is their oyster.”
“It was a wonderful experience for me,” said Veronica Paris, owner of Make the Shift, LLC. She added, “I believe I brought a very different perspective since I was the only business owner who had not actually gone to college. The students seemed to be interested on some level in my career journey.”
Chris McManemin, owner of Scientific Asset Management, said “This was an excellent opportunity to share our knowledge while listening to the future. Giving back and sharing positives and negatives to assist these young people is a highlight of my year.”
“The young adults were very interactive and had great questions. They were very respectful as well. It was a very rewarding experience,” according to Sandra Morrison, co-owner of New Perspectives Health Care.
“We are so thankful to our guest speakers for joining us for the second annual Career Day,” said Jenn Shetsen of TEAM Schools. “We realize that an afternoon is a lot of time to spend away from work, so we feel honored that nearly two dozen community members were able to join us to speak to our students about their futures.”
