We think the residents of Sparta deserve some answers regarding our current mayor’s situation.  Mayor Jerard Murphy was stopped on February 13, 2016 and charged with DWI.  Despite having a BAC of .13%, well above the .08% limit, the DWI charges were dropped.  The police stop was captured on police cam and can be viewed online so people can judge for themselves if they think the Sparta police department did a good job of getting him off the road.

Despite this, Mayor Murphy is suing his own police department over the arrest.  At a recent town meeting as a resident of Sparta I asked a number of questions regarding these matters.  I asked if the Mayor denied he was driving while drunk and wanted answers about his lawsuit and how much it was costing the residents of Sparta to defend.

Mayor Murphy said he was not able to answer any of those questions because it is under litigation.
Therefore, we brought a petition to ask for him to withdraw the lawsuit and resign from his position as councilman and mayor.

We all make mistakes and this petition is not about his arrest. It is about whether he is representing the town of Sparta and our interests or his own. If he was to resign as mayor, perhaps he could defend his position and lawsuit. If he was to drop the lawsuit, perhaps he could comment on the situation and explain what the news agency's reporting had gotten wrong.

If you are interested in signing the petition, please go to change.org/SpartaMayor and show up at the next town meeting on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Sincerely,

Glenn Duphiney
