SPARTA, NJ - A Chinese opera company visited Sparta high school students this past week. The company performed a three-person rendition of Shakespeare's King Lear.  The production was done entirely in Chinese for the Chinese world language students.

The show was accompanied by a three person orchestra. The instruments were a traditional Chinese Lyre and a small percussion section.

Performers donned stunning costumes, from a bejeweled princess' gown to a peasant's traditional garb.

The reactions of students ranged widely, as some students had difficulty overcoming the language barrier. Jenni Kurz, a senior, said "It's so wonderful that we are given the chance to see this."

The production lasted about 45 minutes, including time for photos with the performers and a chance for students to try some traditional Chinese dancing for themselves. This was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students who attended.
