Delsontro, Patriots Roll Sussex Tech, 10-0

STANHOPE, NJ - David Delsontro and all of Lenape Valley’s baseball team waited nine games for its first home run of the season. The senior catcher promptly ended that wait Friday afternoon.

Delsontro went 4 for 4 with a blast over the left center field wall, two RBIs, and two runs to propel the Patriots (5-4) to a 10-0, five-inning victory over in-county rival Sussex Tech. The game was shortened due to the ten run mercy rule enacted after five innings. Lenape Valley was able to score in all five of its turns at bat.

“It’s a great feeling right now. But I’m pleased about getting a big win and us getting us over the .500 mark,” said Delsontro after the game.

After Lenape’s 6’3 right hander Drew Burke (W, 2-1) tossed a scoreless top of the first, the home team’s offense began gave him some run support. Third baseman Mike Deerfield led off and doubled, then crossed the plate when Nick Sabatini reached on a throwing error allowing the run to score.

“We were able to jump on them early and put it away. That helped a lot for me today,” noted Burke after the game.

He went the distance, scattering four hits over five innings, striking out five Fighting Mustangs and impressively not walking a single batter.

The Stanhope school added to its lead the next inning when nine-hitter Jimmy Fluke grounded in Anthony Basciano, giving the Patriots an early 2-0 edge.

After Delsontro sent Chris McNulty’s (L, 1-1) off speed delivery out of the yard, John Leyden grounded in Pat Togno, who reached on an error earlier in the frame.

It would be Togno’s turn to strike in the bottom half of the fourth. After three-batter Kenny Costa and Delsontro singled, Togno doubled both runners in and proceeded to advance to third base on a fielding error. McNulty settled down after that, getting Anthony Basciano to pop up in the infield and end the threat.

What turned out to be Sussex Tech’s last chance to bat proved to be unsuccessful, when Burke was able strike out John Crumb looking and McNulty swinging, giving the Patriots a chance to end the game with a four run fifth.

And the Patriots did just that. Keyed by 7-8-9 hitters Leyden, Bryan Falato, and Jimmy Fluke reaching base without an out being recorded, the top of the Lenape lineup came through, with Delsontro capping his unbelievable day by driving in the tenth and decisive run in the form of Costa, who doubled the previous at-bat.

McNulty, Dan Louis, Dustin Burnham, Paul Caron all singled for Sussex Tech (5-4).

The box score:

Sussex Tech (5-4): 0 0 0 0 0- 0

Lenape Valley (5-4): 1 1 2 2 4- 10

Runs Scored: Lenape Valley 10 (Kenny Costa 2, Anthony Basciano, Mike Deerfield, David Delsontro Bryan Falato, Jimmy Fluke, David Kain, John Leyden, Pat Togno.)

HR: Lenape Valley 1 (David Delsontro)

WP: Drew Burke (2-1)

LP:  Chris McNulty (1-1)
