SPARTA, NJ - On December 19, at approximately 12:30 p.m., police were dispatched to the area of 230 Glen Road to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival, Police Officer Tom Snyder observed a 2002 Toyota on the side of the road on Morris Lake Road.
As PO Snyder was turning his vehicle around to ascertain if this was the vehicle that had been called in he observed the driver accelerate in reverse at a high rate of speed, enter Glen Road heading towards town and accelerate away at a high rate of speed.
As PO Snyder approached East Mountain Road, he observed signs that the vehicle had crashed into the guard rail. Further down the road he came across the disabled vehicle and the driver on the side of Glen Road.
PO Snyder observed the driver, Christopher T. Lattig, 45-years-old from Sparta, throwing empty beer cans over the guard rail. After further investigation and failing a series of Field Sobriety Tests, Lattig was arrested for DWI. He was transported to Headquarters for processing and breath testing.
He was charged with DWI, Careless Driving, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Failure to Report an Accident, Littering and Consumption of an Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle. He was released several hours later to a sober friend. Sgt. Keith Hannam and Cpl. Lou Takacs assisted with the investigation.
