SPARTA, NJ - The investigation continues into a structure fire Sunday evening that caused significant damage to a home on Birch Tree Lane.
At 6:02 p.m. a 9-1-1 call from 6 Birch Tree Lane reported the blaze in the two-story dwelling, according to Sgt. John-Paul Beebe of the Sparta Police Department.
Sergeant Jeffrey Mase and Officer Joseph Antonello were the first on scene. Upon arrival, they saw that the flames had engulfed a bedroom and burned through the roof on the second story in the rear of the residence. Several occupants were escorted from the home by the officers as the Sparta Fire Department arrived on scene.
Assisted by the Ogdensburg Fire Department, the blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes. The fire damage was contained to the second story of the home but there is smoke and water damage throughout the residence. There were no injuries reported at the scene.
Sparta Police Detective Jeffrey McCarrick and detectives from the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.
