NEWTON, NJ—With the announcement of the start of Fall Sports to begin on September 14, comes the realization that a portion of the Fall season has been missed. Newton High School seniors who play a fall sport have been invited to submit information about how COVID-19 has affected them during their final season of the sport. This is the fifth installment of a multi part spotlight article.

Samantha DeIorio is a senior who plays right mid-fielder on the Newton High School girls field hockey team.

“During COVID, our summer practices lived up to my expectations. As a team we conditioned, as well as had a lot of team bonding time to get to know each other before the season started,” DeIorio said.

She mentions that going into practices, “I was worried about what we could get done and how much we could work together due to restrictions. However, safely, we accomplished what is usually done during summer practices.”

DeIorio talks about what her experience has been like playing during the final fall season in field hockey during the pandemic.

“So far, my last fall season has been great! COVID has placed certain restrictions upon our practices such as maintaining 6-feet when possible, wearing a mask and following certain sanitation needs with equipment,” she said. “However, I’d say that these restrictions have made us work together more than we’ve ever had to before.”

She notes that the team has “gotten more done than I thought we could have in the time we’ve had together so far. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and can’t wait to make the most of it. I have a great feeling about this season with my team."

The Newton High School Field Hockey team will have their first game on Friday, October 2 beginning at 4 p, m. away, against High Point.
