SPARTA, NJ –Four people were sent to the hospital early Sunday morning following an accident involving three vehicles. According to Sparta Police Department Route 517 was closed between West Mountain Road in Sparta and Brooks Flat Road in Ogdensburg for nearly three hours to investigate the crash.
Police report the initial investigation into the 3:20 a.m. incident showed one car was traveling north and had broken down on the side of the road. A second car had stopped to help. Both drivers and a passenger were out of their automobiles when a third car, also traveling north, “lost control and struck both vehicles and pedestrians,” according to Sparta Police Lt John-Paul Beebe.
Two 17-year-olds were in the first car; a black Nissan Altima. Another person, 21-year-old Erica Flowers of Vernon stopped to offer help, parking her 2002 Hyundai in front of the disabled vehicle. They were all waiting outside of the cars, on the side of the road for AAA to arrive, police said.
Sarah Jane Beagle, a 30-year-old Ogdensburg resident, also driving north on Route 517, lost control of her car. She hit the Altima, from behind, pushing it into the Hyundai and seriously injuring Flowers who was standing between the two vehicles according to police.
Flowers was transported to Morristown Medical Center having sustained serious injuries.
Both 17-year-olds and Beagle were taken to Newton Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. Their condition is unknown, according to police.
Route 517 remained closed through much of the morning as the accident was being investigated by Sparta Police Officer Timothy Lynott with the assistance of the Sparta Police Department’s Detective Bureau and Crash Team. Detective/Sergeant Terrence Mulligan, Detective Jeff McCarrick, Cpl. Kurt Morris and Cpl. Frank Schomp reconstructed the accident scene, according to police. The incident remains under investigation.
Officers from Ogdensburg, Franklin and Hardyston Police Departments and members of First Aid Squads from Ogdensburg and Sparta and Sparta Fire Department provided assistance at the scene.
