FRANKLIN, NJ – A former Newton resident was picked up on charges of theft after trying to deposit a check that had already been deposited.  According to Franklin Borough police, Terry Baughman, 27, took a check from a friend’s home in East Stroudburg, Pennsylvania and tried to deposit it into the Chase Bank in Franklin.

According to police Baughman did not have a current address.

The victim reported the check stolen on July 31.  She had deposited the check using a mobile device, police said.  She said the check was missing after Baughman’s visit.

According to police, Baughman gave the check to another friend in Franklin asking for it to be cashed.  Baughman told the friend it was a check from a family member and he did not have any way to cash it. 

The friend was told the check was fraudulent by the bank, police said.

Baughman was charged with criminal attempt, attempting to obtain currency belonging to the victim.  Baughman also had outstanding warrants from Florida, relating to a larceny charge.  He had an outstanding warrant in Jefferson Township as well related to a traffic violation.

Baum was lodged in the Sussex County jail.
