One of the standout vehicles to be showcased at the SkyView Golf Club on Lafayette Road in Sparta during the Sparta Historical Society’s Gatsby Gala dinner dance on Friday, April 15, 2016, will be billed as the “Car of the Future.” It is a striking re-creation of the 1936 Auburn boat-tail Duesenberg, owned by Vin DePeppo of Lafayette. Clearly, in the 1920’s, this was the car of the future. One could almost imagine Gatsby tooling around in it.
This Roaring Twenties dining and entertainment experience beginning at 6PM will feature the return of the Equinox Band, led by Bernie Franc, and also some prohibition era amusement highlighting the evening.
As with previously held Sparta Historical Society galas, attendees are invited to come in their favorite night-out attire. If they wish, costumes are welcomed, whether it is a 1920’s flapper dress, period accessories, or suit, pinstripes, bowtie and wingtips.
Gala sponsorships and program ad spaces in the journal featured that evening are available. Contact Marjorie Strohsahl at 973-943-2155 for more information on these opportunities or to make reservations for the gala.
The gala is the Society’s major annual fundraiser to benefit the continuing preservation and restoration of the Van Kirk Homestead property, deeded to them in 2014 by the Board of Education. This property, originally settled in 1790 by the Van Kirk family and operated as a prominent dairy farm, features a milk house, wagon barn and another small barn. In addition, this residence houses Sparta’s only Museum and History Education Center.
