Girls are Signing Up for a Summer of Adventure at Girl Scout Camp


 RIVERDALE, NJ - There are still spots open for campers to sign up for Girl Scout Summer Day Camp at Jockey Hollow in Mendham Township and Lake Rickabear in Kinnelon. Parents and guardians can check out one of our Open House events, or our online camp brochure, as well as sign up at www.gsnnj.orgYour girl does not need to be a registered Girl Scout to enjoy a summer of adventure and fun at these exciting camps.

          Girls in first grade through high school can participate in a variety of outdoor activities from July 2 to Aug. 17, 2018 for day camp.Choose a one-week session, several weeks, or all summer long, depending on your family’s schedule. Our Camp Information Open House events are scheduled for the following dates: at Jockey Hollow Camp in Mendham on April 29 and May 20, 2-4 p.m., and at Lake Rickabear Camp in Kinnelon on May 5 and May 20, 2-4 p.m. A recording of our Facebook Live Camp Information Night webinar will help answer questions parents may have and is available for viewing on the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey Facebook page.

           “Girl Scout camp is a wonderful opportunity for girls of all ages to explore their interests, enjoy the outdoors, and make friends that will last a lifetime,” said Betty A. Garger, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey.  “There are a variety of program themes from science to drama, and sports to cooking.”

          Jockey Hollow Camp is located in Mendham Township and runs seven one-week sessions. Girls will enjoy the 212-acre camp, an L-shaped swimming pool, Low Ropes Challenge Course and zip line, archery range, horse corral, large playing field, new cabins, and adventurous hiking trails. Camp activities include daily American Red Cross swimming lessons, outdoor cooking and hiking, environmental programs, optional pony or horseback riding, optional overnights and field trips, and much more. 

          For girls who like ponies or horses, there are the Pony Fun, Pony Fun Plus, and Horsemanship sessions. Girls who want to experience day camp and resident camp can still join Day and Away. Girls spend the first week of camp at Jockey Hollow Day Camp forming friendships with fellow campers and counselors while participating in all general camp activities. The following week, campers venture off to Camp Lou Henry Hoover, owned and operated by Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, with the same unit and counselors to experience resident camp. This program is designed to provide a comfortable transition from day camp to resident camp. Day and Away Camp is offered to girls entering grades 4 through 6.

          At Lake Rickabear, girls from grades 1 through 12 can choose from seven one-week themed sessions at the 332-acre property in Kinnelon, which includes a 40-acre, spring-fed lake. Classic camp activities, such as exploring nature, arts and crafts, swimming, and boating are offered each week, along with additional activities that reflect the theme of each session.

          There are still openings in the following sessions: Sweet Summer and Sweet Summer Teen where girls create their own candy and other delicious confections. In Out of This World, girls build their own rockets and learn about everything outer space. During Camp Like a Girl Scout, girls learn how to make a sit-upon, cook over a campfire, and sing campfire songs. Girls will explore animals from near and far during Get Wild week, and for Mystery Mania, girls to put their detective skills to the test as they learn about fingerprinting and how to be secret agent.

          Counselor in Training I session is available for girls who want to step out of the camper role and begin the journey toward being a camp counselor. Girls entering grades 9 and 10, who are 14 years old as of July 3, can register for the two-week leadership training program.

          All Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey facilities are accredited with the American Camp Association. All swim lessons are provided by certified lifeguards who meet American Red Cross standards. Camp fees include transportation to and from the camp, with bus stops in a number of towns around northern New Jersey.

JCP&L Latest Information, Free Ice and Water

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – As of 8:47 p.m. JCP&L is reporting 12,745 customers or 22.11 percent, are without power in Sussex County.  In Sparta 2749 or 32 percent remain in the dark.
