NEWTON, NJ - In honor of Veterans Day, the Girls on the Run team at the Florence M. Burd School in Andover made 80 placemats that they donated to Newton Medical Center. The Veterans at the hospital were treated to a colorful, handmade placemat during their lunch. The hospital’s nutrition, speech therapy and food departments worked in tandem to distribute the placements to the Veterans.
The Girls on the Run curriculum involves the girls completing a community service event. They were delighted to team up with Newton Medical Center. Girls on the Run coaches explained that this was something the 14 team members could do that would brighten up a Veteran’s day.
When asked what is the best part about Girls on the Run, the girls felt they had learned several things including how to stop gossiping and how to stand up to bullies. Most notably, they said they now know “how to be confident for the rest of our lives” and how important it is “to give 100% in everything we do.”
Girls on the Run New Jersey North serves girls in Sussex, Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties, and is one of over 200 chapters across the United States.
