Good Showing for Sparta High School Ski Team

SPARTA, NJ-In their second Giant Slalom race of the year each Sparta High School Ski  team improved their standings in the Liberty League.  

Rachel Stote again finished first in the JV girls race with a combined time of 1:56.04.  

The girls varsity team again finished first in the Liberty League with a team time of 7:17.08.  They increased their lead this week to 13 seconds over 2nd place, Vernon High School.  Juliana Kaminski led the girls with a fifth place with Kimmy Conlan right behind her with a sixth place finish.  Lauren Scott finished two places better than last week with a solid 15th place finish out of a field of  32 skiers.

The boys JV had three skiers in the top five on Thursday night.  Ryan Bloomgren finished second overall.  Right behind Bloomgren was Justin Allan in third place. Nick Tartaglia took fifth place.

Sparta's boys varsity team blew away their first nights performance with a second place finish.  Their team time was 6:56.04.  Brad Maierle, Ryan Dumbroff and Derek Dykstra all finished within the top ten.  Brad finished fifth, Ryan finished seventh, and Derek finished ninth, each improving they finishes from last week.   Chester Sears made his way onto the varsity team this week and impressed all.  He finished fourth on the team and contributed to the four times used for the official boys team time.

The third Giant Slalom race in the Liberty League is on Thursday, January 23. 

On Saturday, January 25 the Varsity time will participate in the Slalom Festival at Mt Peter.

Sparta Police: Suspended Speeding Driver Stopped, Arrested on Warrants

SPARTA,  NJ – A Paterson man was stopped for speeding ended up getting picked up on outstanding warrants.  On February 10 around 11:20 a.m. Sparta Police Officer Thomas Snyder stopped Jonathan Rodriguez, 32 for going 80 mph in a 55 mph, according to police.

One Injured in Two-Family House Fire in Newton
