Bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senator Steven Oroho, Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, and Assemblyman Gary Chiusano (all R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) to permit county clerks to provide military veterans with identification cards was signed into law today by Governor Chris Christie.  The cards are designed to assist veterans in receiving discounts and other well-deserved courtesies from area businesses and organizations.

  “This worthwhile initiative is for those who have risked their lives to preserve our freedom,” said Oroho.  “It is a simple and rightful recognition of the sacrifice made by countless veterans.”

 The legislation, S-323/A-2561, was passed unanimously by both houses of the Legislature earlier in the year. It would allow county clerks or registers of deeds and mortgages to create identification cards for resident veterans who don’t have federally issued cards and were honorably discharged from service. The cards would not serve as proof for government business or benefits.

“It is appropriate to honor veterans’ service to our nation and state,” continued McHose.  “The partnership of local government and businesses in offering discounted services to veterans is proving enormously popular.”

 Sussex County is already providing these cards to certain veterans, an initiative first started by Sussex County Clerk Jeff Parrott, Sussex County Sheriff Mike Strada and Senator Oroho.

“I am proud to see a local initiative to help veterans become law of the land,” said Chiusano.  “I encourage every county in the State to set up a program similar to the one in Sussex County and for veterans to take advantage of it.

Parrott, who has taken the lead in promoting this concept, is also pleased at the enactment of this legislation.

 “This bill will enable additional veterans to obtain the identification cards,” said Parrott.  “The card presents the perfect opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to our veterans by offering them a special discount on various goods and services.”
