SPARTA, NJ - Elizabeth Sheeran, a fifth grade student at Helen Morgan School, finished tenth in the SIFMA Foundation’s national InvestWrite essay competition. An awards ceremony was held in Jersey City on May 27, where Elizabeth earned a certificate and several prizes.

The essay contest served as a culminating activity for the year-long national Stock Market Game in which Elizabeth and her math STEP classmates participated.

Each year about 600,000 fourth through 12 grade students compete in the Stock Market Game, analyzing stocks, bonds and mutual funds, and creating financial portfolios. This year, Helen Morgan students, advised by STEP teacher, Cherie Shefferman, finished the game with six teams ranked in the top ten of their division.

Elizabeth is one of 20,000 students who also participated in the InvestWrite challenge as a part of their stock market studies. Her spring 2015 winning InvestWrite essay went through a rigorous judging process in which thousands of teachers and financial industry professionals evaluated students’ essays for overall understanding of the stock market and their ability to express their investment ideas in written form.
