SPARTA, NJ - On May 25, at approximately 4:35 p.m. police were dispatched to the 200 block of West Shore Trail for the reported hit and run of a parked vehicle. The accused vehicle fled the scene towards Byram. Cpl. Marc Rubino and Cpl. Brian Hassloch responded to the scene.
As Cpl. Rubino began investigating the accident, Cpl. Hassloch began to check the area for the vehicle that had fled the scene. A witness had provided a description of the vehicle that fled and Cpl. Hassloch located a similar vehicle with heavy front end damage parked in the driveway of a house in the 300 block of West Shore Trail.
The vehicle, a 2014 Chevy Malibu had damage consistent with the damage to the struck parked vehicle. Cpl. Hassloch met with the owner of the Chevy, 42-year-old Patrick J. Dunn of Sparta in the driveway of the residence. He showed signs of a head injury consistent with damage to the windshield of the vehicle.
After further investigation and failing a series of Field Sobriety Tests, Mr. Dunn was arrested for DWI. He was transported to Headquarters for processing and breath testing after refusing any medical treatment from the Sparta First Aid Squad.
He was charged with DWI, Leaving The Scene Of An Accident, Failure To Report A Motor Vehicle Accident, Reckless Driving, Failure To Wear A Seatbelt and Failure To Keep Right.
He was released several hours later to a sober adult pending a court date.
