Hockey Clinics Take the Ice at Skylands in March


STOCKHOLM, NJ – Skylands Ice World has a lot going on.  March is a busy month on the ice at Skylands for hockey clinics. 

Goalie Clinics with Tom Huber are under way with five sessions.  Four sessions remain; Friday March 10, 17 and 31 from 5:50 to 6:50 p.m.  On Thursday, March 23 there is a session from 7 to 8 p.m.

Tom Huber works with the Skylands Kings youth and junior hockey goalies and is a former Rutgers University ACHA Div. 1 goaltender.  The clinics will focus on power skating, save technique and tracking the puck. Tom's drills are derived from his work with Mitch Korn's staff (Washington Capitals), Mike Buckley's staff (Pittsburgh Penguins), and Jon Elkin's staff (Phoenix Coyotes).

Local Junior A and 18 AAA goaltending instructors

Pre-tryout Camps with Patrick Choules for Mite, Squirt and Pee Wee players.  Register by March 13 for $100, space permitted $120 after 13th.

Bantam and Midget players for $100 registered by April 9.

Pre-tryout Camp Schedule:

  • Mites- March 14, 16, 28, 30   5:50 to 5:50 p.m.
  • Squirts – March 14, 16, 28, 30   7 to 8 p.m.
  • Pee Wees – March 14, 16, 28, 30   8:10 to 9:10 p.m.
  • Bantam/Midgets- April 10 at 7:20 to 8:20 p.m.  April 11 and 13 at 7:30 to 9 p.m.

These camps are perfect for the serious travel player who is looking to get on the ice prior to tryouts. The clinics are designed to better prepare players for their respective tryouts in April. The camps will focus on getting players back into playing shape while at the same time refining their skills and placing them in game like situations that will keep them engaged. It is important to keep players focused leading up to tryouts and these camps will achieve that.

Three day March Clinic with Adam Mitchell for Pee Wee and Bantam.  $90 for three days.  Early registration $75.  Walk on $30 space permitting.

Monday, March 6  6:40 to 7:40 p.m.

Monday's clinic will focus on power skating both with and without the puck. Speed, quickness and the ability to effectively and efficiently move up the ice has become the dominating factor in hockey today. Players will be challenged through various drills that will push them outside their comfort zone to become more comfortable on their edges, more powerful, and more effective with their skating stride.

Tuesday, March 7  6:40 to 7:40 p.m.

Tuesday's clinic will focus on skill development. Players will be pushed outside their comfort zone in various stick handling, passing, shooting and one on one competition drills.  This will be a fast-paced, high tempo hour demanding the highest focus and attention to detail.

Thursday, March 9 6:40 to 7:40 p.m.

Thursday's clinic will focus on full contact competition drills and game like situations. Players will learn how to properly protect themselves from a body check, as well as learn how to properly deliver a body check.  Players will challenge each other in small group games and full ice scrimmages.

Checking Clinic with Patrick Choules for birthdates 1999 to 2004. Register early for $75, full price $90.  Walk on $30 space permitting.

Clinic dates March 20, 21, 23.  Classroom seminar 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:40 p.m. on ice.

This clinic will include three off-ice educational seminars led by Hockey Director, Patrick Choules.  Following each seminar will be an hour and ten minutes of on-ice instruction. The goal of this clinic is to educate the Bantam age players on the importance of proper checking and physical contact.

MUST attend all sessions!

Please be on time and bring a notebook and pen or pencil.
