St. Mary’s Episcopal Church offers worship services during Holy Week, beginning with the Maundy Thursday service on Thursday, April 13, and concluding with Easter services on Sunday, April 16, celebrated by the Rev. Debbie Brewin-Wilson.
A Maundy Thursday service will be held on Thursday, April 13 at 7:30 pm and will feature a foot washing and stripping of the altar. Maundy Thursday or “Holy Thursday” is the day Christians commemorate the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples and washed their feet on the night before he was crucified.
Two Good Friday services will be offered on Friday, April 14 at 12:30 pm and 7:30 pm in remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus with a day of special devotion. The 12:30 service will feature the Stations of the Cross, a liturgical way to reenact Jesus’ journey to the cross. At the evening liturgy, we follow the ancient three-fold practice for the day of hearing the liturgy of the Word; venerating the cross; and taking communion from the reserve sacrament.
The celebration of the Easter Vigil will take place on Saturday, April 15, at 7:30 pm and will be a joint service with Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church . As has been done since antiquity, this service begins outside with the kindling of a new fire in our Memorial Garden, the lighting of candles, a procession into the Church, and hearing readings that tell us of God’s relationship with us from the very beginning of time. The service continues with the readings of the story of salvation from the Old and New testaments followed by Holy Communion.
Easter Sunday is celebrated with Holy Eucharist on Sunday, April 16 at 8:00 am and 10:30 am celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The 10:30 service will be followed by a celebration and Easter Egg Hunt along with a visit from the Easter Bunny.
