SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School will have two new administrators, sort of. One is not new to Sparta. The vice principal and principal positions were filled at the special board of education meeting on Monday night.
Cecil “Bud” Beavers was approved as interim high school principal, filling the position being vacated by Janet Ferraro at the end of the month.
Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi said the search for the interim principal was conducted by principals’ and superintendents’ associations. When they presented him with three candidates, he recognized one name on the list.
According to the agenda, Beavers will be paid $700 per diem from December 19, 2018 through June 30, 2019. The current principal’s contract equates to approximately $570 per day.
“He is a 50 year veteran of public education,” Rossi said. He said he “worked under Bud in Randolph as did Mike Gregory.” Danielle Hamblin has also worked with Beavers according to Rossi and “we are learning about other connections.”
Beavers has served as interim in Great Meadows, Roxbury as well as principal at Randolph, Rossi said.
The current Social Studies and World Language Supervisor Michael Lauricelli has been approved as vice principal at Sparta High School.
Lauricelli replaces Steve Schels. Schels, also a previous Social Studies and World Language Supervisor, resigned his position as high school vice principal to return to a supervisor position in another district.
Rossi explained the district received 105 applications for the vice principal’s job. According to Rossi the search committee of 20 was comprised of “teachers, district staff, central office staff and building staff.”
The committee conducted 16 interviews and six final interviews, according to Rossi.
“It was a very competitive process,” Rossi said. “I’m proud to announce Mike Lauricella is the new vice principal. He is energetic and thoughtful and will help the district fulfill the strategic plan.”
The regular board of education meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 17 at Mohawk Avenue School beginning at 7:30 p.m.
