I’m Mike McGovern, and I’m seeking a three-year term on the Sparta Board of Education.  I’ve been a proud Sparta resident for the past ten years.  My wife, Patti, teaches Second Grade at Alpine Elementary; two of our children are Sparta High School graduates, and our oldest is a Senior at SHS this year.  I’m connected to this community and, like every Sparta resident, have a vested interest in Sparta Schools.

Our Board of Education and the Administration are facing unprecedented challenges that will continue long past various forms of lock-downs and other restrictions.  More than ever, we need Integrity, Transparency, and Innovation.  During my last tenure on the Board, I saw the effects of an opaque board and Administration, and I’m running again to do my part to make sure we keep moving in the right direction.

The role of the Board is to set a vision for our district that puts Sparta’s children’s education and well-being FIRST, ensure we have a capable administration, and provide governance of that administration.  That governance includes being supportive while still holding the administration accountable for actions to make sure the needs of our students and professional staff are met.

The Board to be seated in January 2021 will have the massive responsibility of hiring a new Superintendent and permanent Business Administrator.  Our search and selection process needs to be rigorous and thorough.  We need a Superintendent that shares Sparta’s values and is willing to embrace Innovation now and for a long time to come.  Our school community deserves stability and the best leadership team we can get.

As a board trustee, I will scrutinize and maximize the budget as the taxpayers expect and deserve.  The budget process needs open dialogue and clarity.  We need to be Innovative in how we make the most of our resources without short-shrifting the needs of our children.  A move like the recent restructuring of our debt was a great move.  Shared services with the Township is another smart move.  We can build on that with the right team in place.

On November 3rd or when you vote by mail, I ask that you support the team that stands for Integrity, Transparency and Innovation:
