My name is Kim Bragg and I am running for the Sparta Board of Education. I was appointed to the BOE in June of 2016 then went on to successfully run for election in November of 2016. I have been an active member of the community since moving here with my family 17 years ago.
Public education is my passion. Every strong community needs a strong school district as its cornerstone. Through my many years of volunteering in all five of our schools, I have gotten to know the teachers, principals as well as many staff members, parents and students. Sparta has a lot to be proud of.
I am honored to serve on the board of education, but there is work to be done.
My primary focus will be on academics. Sparta has much to offer our students by way of extracurricular activities and sports, but it must make academics at all ability levels its top priority.
Transparency must improve. The community has the right to be aware of decisions in a timely manner because it is the community that the Board of Education represents. Communication to all stakeholders is key.
I represent our community. My husband and I have chosen Sparta as the place to raise our family and call home. It is very important to me that the community is well represented when making board of education decisions – from parents, students, families without children and senior citizens. I always consider the impact of decisions on the community the board makes.
We all have a stake in our community. Everybody’s input has merit and all deserve to be treated with respect; from Sparta citizens to staff and my fellow board of education members.
Fiscal responsibility should be part of nearly every decision a board member makes. Balancing the needs of our students while remaining conservative with our tax dollars is always important to me.
Safety and security has long been a focus of mine since joining the board. It will continue to be. The safety and security of our students and staff is of paramount importance.
A bit about me:
My husband Bill and I have two sons. Billy just graduated from Sparta High School and will be attending Syracuse University. Nate will be at Helen Morgan School this fall.
I earned my B.S. from Syracuse University and my M.A. from Marist College. I am a former Director of Marketing and more recently a Corporate Communications Consultant.
I have spent a significant amount of time over the last three years attending training by New Jersey School Boards’ Association (NJSBA), beyond what is required. On May 1, 2019, the New Jersey School Board Association qualified me as Board Certified. I am the only NJSBA Board Certified member on the Sparta Board of Education.
Training workshops attended:
- School Safety and Student Security Conference;
- Evaluating Your Superintendent: A New Way To Perform A Crucial Task;
- Fundamentals Of School Finance, Budgeting And Negotiations
- Best Practices For A Successful Policy Committee,
- Essentials Of School Board Leadership,
- Operating Within an Effective Committee System, and many more.
I regularly attend the Sussex County School Boards Association meetings. I don’t attend these training sessions because I enjoy the long drives or time away from my family. I have attended because I feel strongly that in order to best serve as a BOE member you must be well informed.
I am proud to be running with Kurt Morris and Niamh Grano. I am a very dedicated Sparta BOE member and I hope that I have your vote on November 5, 2019. Please contact me with any questions you may have at email@example.com.
