One thing constantly heard from parents and alumni of Sparta when they walk through Alpine Elementary, Mohawk Avenue and Helen Morgan schools, is that the buildings are old, outdated and the same as when they attended 20, 30, 40+ years ago. How is that possible?

Within these years, the high school has been updated significantly to be a state of the art facility and a new middle school has been built.

But what about all the other schools? The younger students, the future of our district, deserve the same kind of facilities as the older students.

From replacing the blacktop behind Alpine School where the students have recess to repairing the cracks on the floor of the schools All Purpose Room and no air conditioning throughout all the elementary schools creating an uncomfortable and unhealthy environment for all the students;  these are just a few of the things that should have been considered over the years.

Updating the elementary school facilities was identified by the facility group at the district’s Long Range Strategic Planning meetings.

We’ve seen time and time again, it’s not until parents get “loud” that changes are made in the elementary schools and that shouldn’t be the case.

The district should be looking at all the buildings and allocating the resources and funding needed to make each building the best it can be for all the students of Sparta.
