Last Minute Ideas to Entertain the Family this Weekend

After last week’s dreary weekend, we are all looking forward to the nicer weather this coming Saturday and Sunday. Avoid the crowds at the shore and instead opt to attend one of the following family-friendly activities in the North Jersey area. Most of the events are free or inexpensive—ideal for those trying to save money after a jam-packed summer.

Canal Day Musical and Craft Festival

Celebrate the Morris Canal with a day of fun and music. On August 19 from 10 am to 5 pm, the festival will take over Hugh Force Canal Park in Wharton. The event features two musical stages as well as classic festival activities such as pony rides and face painting. Don’t miss out on the blacksmith demonstrations or the free narrated boat rides.

Family Woodland Hike

The New Jersey Botanical Garden in Ringwood is offering a free guided hiking experience on Sunday at 1 pm. The hike is easy and appropriate for all ages. Tour guides will discuss the magnificent plant and animal life found on the grounds. The event is free with guests meeting at the garden’s Carriage House Visitor Center.

Hillsborough Rotary Fair

The 10th Annual Rotary Fair is coming back to Hillsborough this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, the fair will operate between the hours of 6 pm to 10 pm and from 2 pm to 7 pm on Sunday. Fireworks are scheduled to go off at dusk on Friday. Saturday will be a wristband night where you pay one low price and go on unlimited rides. Skip dinner since you’ll want to save your appetite for all the delicious food and treats available at the carnival.

Food, Wine and Beer Festival

Edison’s Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual food truck festival this Saturday from 12 pm to 7 pm at Papaianni Park. Entrance fee is only $5 with children under 10 free of charge. Besides a large number of food vendors such as the Empanada Guy and Cypress Brewery, there will be craft vendors, games and children’s activities. A DJ will be spinning records as you eat your fill and sip your craft beer.

Sparta Police: Vernon Man Hits a Curb, Gets DWI

SPARTA, NJ – A Vernon man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after he hit a curb and disabled his Jeep.  On November 30 around 11;20 p.m. Sparta Police Officer Ericks Finley found the Robert Houdershieldt, 44, sitting in his Grand Cherokee on the Route 15 southbound ramp, police say.

It was strange to get a phone message at a local movie theater that my house was on fire in Lake Stockholm on Friday. It was thirty years ago that I had a house fire in the same community, but tonight I was at the AMC movie in Rockaway getting a call about my house again being on fire.
