SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School Director of Guidance Rory Fitzgerald announced Lauren Scaglione was given the Daughter of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award for 2014.
The organization’s publication says “The DAR Good Citizen Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.” The characteristics they are looking for include dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in the home, school and community.
Fitzgerald said, “Lauren was nominated along with other students by staff and counselors. A selection was made based on nomination, recommendation letters and academic record. Lauren then had to complete the application process and sit for a two hour essay exam on citizenship.”
Scaglione said, "It is an honor to be recognized by DAR, an organization that values community service and citizenship."
The DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization. It was founded in 1890 and is based in Washington DC. They promote patriotism, preserving American history and provide educational opportunities through scholarship and financial aid.
The women in the organization can prove that they are a lineal descendent from a patriot of the American Revolution. To date there are 177,000 members in the 3,000 chapters.
