SPARTA, NJ - The Sparta boys lacrosse team defeated cross-town rivals Pope John, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tri-county tournament on Tuesday.
Goalie Reid McCall had an outstanding game. His 21 saves gave Sparta a chance to advance in the tournament.
Jesse West had three goals and an assist. Stelios Kroudis had a goal and an assist. Jack Valentine and Mike Freeman also added a goal each.
Russ Eberding went 9 for 13 on face-offs while collecting seven groundballs.
Sophomore McCall was the story of the game. To even give up 20 plus shots is difficult to overcome but McCall just kept fighting off the shots and Sparta scored six goals on their 24 shots. It was a heavy shooting game with little goals thanks to the great goaltending.
Sparta is now 6-7 on the season. They play Morristown on Thursday, They also advanced to the semifinal with the win.
