ALLOWING SMALL BREWERIES TO INCREASE PRODUCTION AND OPEN MORE FACILITIES WILL HELP ECONOMY & CREATE JOBS

            Bipartisan legislation lifting restrictive regulations on New Jersey microbreweries was approved today by the Assembly Appropriations Committee. It is sponsored by Assembly Republican Alison Littell McHose.

            The legislation, A-1277, would increase the production limit for small brew pubs from 3,000 barrels to 10,000 barrels per year and allow them to operate 10 retail or dining establishments, instead of two. The bill also reduces the fees on licenses.

            “Sales of craft brews have grown much faster than other beers throughout the nation. This reform will allow New Jersey to capitalize on a growing part of the economy,” said  McHose, R-Sussex, Warren and Morris. “This legislation will give breweries reason to stay in New Jersey, expand their business and create jobs.”

            According to the national Brewers Association, sales of craft beer by dollar increased 15 percent each of the past two years, while overall beer sales have been down. The association says craft breweries employ more than 100,000 in the United States.

            “Small beer is big business,” McHose said. “New Jersey’s talented artisan brewers face restrictions that make it harder to compete with other states. Lifting those barriers will enable small breweries to grow as much as the market allows. This will benefits small businesses, the economy and consumers seeking more choices among the state’s finest home-brewed beer.”
