NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School boys soccer team have taken the North 1, Group 2 title for the second year in a row.
This year, sixth-seeded Newton took on fifth-seeded Mahwah and won 2-1 in overtime on Friday, when they played away at Mahwah’s field.
Kevin Ayoso scored both goals in the Braves victory over Mahwah to move the team to the semifinals.
Ayoso gave Newton the lead 15 minutes into the game with an assist from David Crowley. Mahwah's Allessandro Vicidomini quickly answered back bringing the game to a tie. The 1-1 score remained through regular play.
Ayoso added the "golden goal" six minutes into the first overtime period with an assist from Tommy Herman to win the game and take the title once again.
The Newton Boys Soccer team advances to the Group 2 semifinals which will be played against Dover on Tuesday, November 14, at Ridge beginning at 7:30 p.m. The other teams playing for the overall Group 2 championship are Holmdel and Delran. The final game will be played at Kean University on November 19.
