NEWTON, NJ—The Newton Police Department received a 9-1-1 call in regards to a stolen purse from a woman shopping at the Newton Shop Rite. On Tuesday, August 2 around 2:39 p.m. police officers responded to the call at 125 Water Street.

According to the police, after investigating the scene and gathering eyewitness accounts, they were able to identify Turner Graham, 27, of Mulford Road, Lafayette, as the man who had taken the victim’s purse from her shopping cart and then fled the store.

The victim's purse was found by responding officers a short distance from the store and returned to her, with all of its contents, valued at $387.00. Graham was located at a nearby house, arrested and charged with theft of moveable property, according to police.

Graham was released on a complaint summons pending an appearance in Sussex County Superior Court on Wednesday, August 24.

Newton Police Department investigating officers were Ptl. John Flanagan, Ptl. Ken Teets, Sgt. Michael Monaco, DSG. Dean Coppolella, Det. Steve VanNieuwland, and Det. Thomas Muller. They were assisted by Andover Twp. Police Department and the New Jersey State Police as well.
