SPARTA, NJ -Sparta residents will be asked to elect three people to serve on the Township Council and three to serve on the Board of Education on Nov. 4.  There are several deadlines affecting prospective candidates and voters.

For the Sparta Board of Education, the terms of Richard Bladek, Frank Favichia and Scott Turner expire this year.  None of the incumbents responded to the inquiry by The Alternative Press of Sparta ( as to their plans to seek re-election.

For Sparta Township Council, the terms of Mayor Molly Whilesmith, former mayor Gil Gibbs and John Schon expire this year. Whilesmith said she does plan to run for re-election.

Gibbs responded, “Right now I am trying to get through the campaign for (Friends of) Sal. After the Fourth of July, my wife and I are going to sit down to discuss it further. “

Schon did not respond to the inquiry by The Alternative Press of Sparta ( as to whether or not he would seek re-election.

In 2012, the election for Board of Education was moved from April to November to coincide with the other local, state and national elections. Petitions for candidates seeking a seat on the Sparta Board of Education are available on line.  Completed petitions must be returned to the Sussex County Clerk’s office at 83 Spring St., Suite 304, Newton, by 4 p.m. on July 28.  The petitions require signatures of ten registered Sparta voters. 

Nominating petitions for Township Council are now available through the Municipal Clerk’s office.  They need to be completed with 144 individual signatures of registered Sparta voters and returned to clerk Mary Coe’s office by 4 p.m. on Sept. 2. 

The Board of Education will meet on Monday, June 23 and June 30 at 7:30 p.m. at  the Mohawk Avenue School. Sparta Township Council will meet on Tuesday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. in town hall.
