SPARTA, NJ-Mayor Gil Gibbs presented two Patriot Awards at the Sparta Town Council meeting on Tuesday evening.

The first group to be recognized was Girl Scout Troop 4564.  Gibbs announced they were the first to join the newly formed "Adopt the Park" program.  "This program is to beautify Sparta," explained Gibbs.  The girls and leaders "put together the flower bed in front of the Sparta movie theater and beneath the township advertising sign in the Theater Center.  They made the beds, got the flowers and planted them."  People or organizations that join this program commit to maintaining a park or area of Sparta throughout the year.

Leonard Girardo and his wife Elizableth, owners of J Thomas Jewelers, received the second award of the evening.  Gibbs explained Girardo's long history of supporting Sparta recreation  sports teams through sponsorship. The Girardos further their commitment to supporting the children of this community through donations and support of various fundraising events of the Sparta Education Foundation.

Patriot Awards are presented by Gibbs each month to people or organizations who volunteer their time and resources for the betterment of the community.
