SPARTA, NJ – The town has been tied up in teal to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. The teal ribbons were tied on lamp posts on Main Street again this year by Sparta resident and band teacher Andrew Lopez and his friends and family.
Lopez was invited to the Sparta Township Council meeting on Tuesday night to receive a proclamation from Mayor Christine Quinn recognizing September as Ovarian Cancer awareness month. Lopez explained his mother Janice received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2005. Despite the grim prognosis, she survived several years.
They had all gotten involved with the Kaleidoscope of Hope’s efforts to raise awareness and funds. “The ribbons start the conversation,” Lopez said.
Lopez’s efforts do not end with tying ribbons. They are holding a benefit concert in Janice Lopez’s name to raise money for research. It will be held on Sunday, September 25 at the Crossroads Theater in New Brunswick. Lopez attended Rutgers University, located in that town.
The program will feature “The Encore Orchestra of New Jersey” Ilene Greenbaum, Musical Director and Conductor. The show includes performances by Broadway’s:
- Willy Flak of Miss Saigon and Les MIserables,
- Marc G. Dalio of Beauty of the Beast and Les Miserables,
- Suzanne Ishee of Phantom of the Opera and Show Boat
- William Michals of South Pacific and Beauty and the Beast
And will feature Jenna Rose and Julie Galorenzo.
In addition to the music, there will be hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased on line.
