Three local teens were named as youth ambassadors for the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.): Brenna Tento, Amara Underwood and Katie Kalfayan.

A total of 12 ambassadors from eight states and two Canadian provinces were chosen.

Brenna Tento, of Pennsylvania competes in hunters and equitation with Scatter Creek, a.k.a. Joe.

In September, the Jockey Club named name Tento as 2017 Young Rider of the Year.

The young rider award, recognizes a rider 18 or younger who owns or leases a Thoroughbred for use in 4-H, Pony Club or other activities, and includes a $5,000 prize.

Tento, 16, lives in Harleysville, Pa.

Tento first became interested in Thoroughbreds after leasing a Thoroughbred named Nash.

“When my lease ended, I knew I wanted a horse as versatile and willing as Nash,” Tento said. “In order to have a horse that versatile, I knew that I needed to buy a Thoroughbred.”

Tento plans to use the funds from her award to pay for horse show and travel expenses to competitions, including the New Vocations Charity Show and T.I.P. Championship Horse Show, in which she competed this September at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.

I would like to tell people that they should become involved in the programs that the Thoroughbred Incentive Program offers. T.I.P. has given me and my Thoroughbred many opportunities and has the ability to give you these opportunities as well,” she said.

Amara Underwood, of Pennsylvania competes in eventing, jumpers, and dressage with her Thoroughbred, Yo Koffy.

Thoroughbreds are a versatile and talented breed. Within the Thoroughbred breed not every horse is suited for every rider but there is a horse suited for every rider's situation. OTTBs are able, competitive and smart, however they may require a bit more patience and dedication to get to their full potential,” she said.

Katie Kalfayan of New Jersey competes in hunters, jumping and dressage with Cattail Creek, nicknamed Norm.

I would like to tell people how versatile Thoroughbreds are — they can do, and excel, in nearby all forms of riding. Additionally, I would like to tell people about T.I.P. because I think that it is a great way to encourage more people to ride Thoroughbreds.”

Additional information about the Youth Ambassador Program is available at tjctip.com/About/TBYPAM.

The Jockey Club also announced it will offer awards and classes at more than 1,200 shows in 42 states and six Canadian provinces in 2018.

Awards are available for multiple disciplines, including eventing, dressage, Western and English pleasure, hunter/jumper, endurance, Western performance, games, and polocrosse. Awards are also available at some events for Thoroughbreds within their first two years of showing or for Thoroughbreds within two years of their last start.

A full calendar of shows offering awards is available at tjctip.com/CalendarOfEvents.

Created in 2011, T.I.P. recognizes and rewards the versatility of the Thoroughbred through sponsorship of Thoroughbred classes and high point awards at sanctioned horse shows, performance awards, and non-competition awards.  In addition to the complete schedule of T.I.P.-sponsored shows, other information about the program is available on the T.I.P. website, tjctip.com.

Those interested in T.I.P. can follow the program at facebook.com/tjctip.
