The hits discrepancy between the two teams told the whole story of the game. While Sparta had 14 hits, they held Walkill Valley to just three. Spartan designated hitter Matt Sigillo had three of those hits, going 3-for-5.
Matt Guerra started for Sparta. He had a strong 5.2 innings pitched, allowing just two hits and one run. The homerun hitter Patten came in for an inning and struck out two hitters.
Jake Zurillo had two doubles and Mike Vocaturo had a two-run single to put the game out of reach in the fifth inning.
The Spartans spread out their scoring after the first inning. They scored runs in every other inning and finished the game with 3 more in the seventh. Every batter was dangerous from one through nine. An at-bat was not thrown away and each player wanted to keep the hits coming.
Early in the season, this game was important for Sparta because Coach Sam Slobodzian's squad did not want to fall to 0-2. One in the win column give the team a better outlook for the season.
