As a parent and active member of the voting community, I am honored to write this letter of support for Kim Bragg and her running mates Kurt Morris and Niamh Grano for the Sparta Board of Education. To me personally, every election is an important one because it is the public’s opportunity to choose their representatives–their voices–and the Board of Education election is no different.

I have been extremely fortunate to have served the past 10 months of my first year as a Board of Education Member alongside Kim Bragg so I know firsthand the kind of Board Member she is. Month after month, Kim is actively working to ensure the school community is being accurately represented by her. Reading up on policy, attending training, researching agenda items so that any questions she has prepared are relevant, keeping informed of educational trends and issues are just some of the ways Kim works to guarantee she is fulfilling the role this community chose her for. Working side by side with her, it became obvious early on to me that Kim takes this position very seriously. Not only is she always available to discuss issues or circumstances in the district, but she has been an invaluable resource to me as a new Board Member in sharing her experience and guiding me when I have questions, totally willingly and completely free of judgement. Though she is not the most senior board member, she is far and away our most trained.  Kim has worked hard to become a state certified board member which is no small task and she is the only Board Member to have been awarded that honor.

When I see the kind of commitment Kim has made to her role as a Board of Ed member, I see in her the exact kind of Board Member I want to be and the kind that I want to elect. I see someone who is hard-working, intelligent, thorough and sensitive to the needs of EVERY student. Someone that is not afraid to ask questions when she has them or gain clarity on any issue if she feels it is necessary. She is truly there to represent the needs of ALL of the members in this learning community including students, staff members, parents and taxpayers and that is evident in her voting record and discussion points during meetings. I am confident that if elected she would continue bringing the same work ethic and drive to her role that she has the past 3 years.

I am also supporting her running mates who are two people that I know to be equally dedicated to this township and have proven so in their own daily lives. Kurt Morris is a recognized and respected member of the Sparta Police Department who is known to be present at many school events and always connecting with community members wherever he can. Niamh Grano is an active parent that has devoted a sizable amount of time the past few years to her role as the Alpine PTO President and this year, in addition to that, is serving as the Co-President at the Mohawk Avenue School as well. Any parent with children in the elementary schools can attest to the amount of work that requires and she embraces it year after year with enthusiasm and great success.

In my opinion, a vote in favor of these three is a vote in support of what public education was meant to be. It is meant to be represented by bright, dedicated and engaged community members that will truly work to represent those that elect them. Please consider this when casting your vote this coming Tuesday, November 5th. I certainly will be when I vote in favor of “3, 4, 5” for the Sparta Board of Education.
