Sparta, NJ—At approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, August 19, Rt. 15 was closed at mile marker 14, due to an accident that occurred earlier in the day, according to police.
A dump truck rolled into a pond needed to be removed. A detour was be set up diverting traffic around the area police reported..
According to Sparta Police, Route 15 northbound traffic had to be diverted from the end of the highway up Rt. 181. The detour then directed traffic onto Rt. 517 toward Andover Township, making the right turn onto Limecrest Road, where traffic proceeded back to Route 15 North.
Route 15 Southbound traffic was to be detoured by making a right onto Limecrest Road and then a left hand turn onto Route 517 to the entrance of the 15 south entrance on the 517 junction.
According to Sparta police, the closure is supposed to last between two and three hours. They want to remind everyone to please plan an alternate route if possible.
Earlier today, around 2 p.m. the dump truck driver, Gary Williams, 64 of Bogota, reportedly lost control of his truck as he drove north on Route 15. The fully loaded truck then rolled over the guard rail and into the pond. According to police there were no injuries.
Sparta Police, New Jersey State Police and County Hazmat all responded to the accident.
