SPARTA, NJ – The only senior on the Sparta High School Ice Hockey team was recognized at the game against Park on Jan 30. John Redding was called onto the ice at Skyland’s Ice World before the game. Redding was joined by his mother, father, brother and teammate and neighbor, on the red carpet at center ice.
In celebrating this player, the booster club Treasurer Chris Brady shared John Redding’s biography. “John Earl Redding was born in Canada but has lived nearly all his life in Sparta.” Redding began his hockey career with Sparta Recreation on “this very sheet of ice,” at the age of six.
Redding played on a number of different teams but “most proudly” played for four years on the varsity team for Sparta High School.
Off ice Redding “has a deep passion for music,” playing a variety of instruments including the saxophone, drums, keyboard, ukulele and acoustic guitar.
After graduation Redding plans to study kinesiology and is looking forward to playing club hockey. He has applied to Miami University Ohio, Ohio Western University, Kean University, Penn State and William Paterson University. He has already been accepted to the University of Colorado.
Brady finished the remarks with a quote from Redding,” John would like to thank his past coaches and teammates for inspiring his love of the game, particularly his current coaches Young, Shaughnessy and Pszonek as well as his Sparta hockey teammates for making this a great hockey season."
