NEWTON, NJ - Newton Police received a 9-1-1 call at 9:13 a.m. reporting that there was a fire in a sixth floor apartment located at 33 Mill St., Brookside Terrace Apartments.  Police Officers, Newton Firefighters and Newton First Aid Squad were immediately dispatched.  Upon arrival at 9:14 a.m., Officers reported seeing fire and smoke coming out of a broken window on the sixth floor in front of the building.  They assisted arriving firefighters and began efforts to suppress the fire and evacuate residents from the building.

The Andover, Hampton, Branchville, Frankford, Stillwater, Sparta, Byram, Fredon and Sussex fire departments as well as Lakeland EMS and Atlantic EMS were requested and responded in mutual aid.  Newton OEM and the Sussex County Fire Marshall’s Office also responded to the scene.

The fire was reported to be completely extinguished at 9:46 a.m.

During the evacuation of the residents, an 85-year-old woman fell and received a minor head injury.  All residents were able to re-enter the building and return to their apartments at 10:40 a.m.

An investigation was conducted, assisted by the Newton Police Detective Bureau.  The scene was processed for evidence and witnesses were interviewed.  Preliminary investigation shows that the fire was likely accidental caused by a juvenile resident of the apartment who was playing with a cigarette lighter.  No criminal charges are pending at this time.
