SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta High School alumnae will be running in the New York City Marathon this November to raise money for the Team V Foundation. Sara Lucas graduated from Sparta with 12 Varsity Letters having competed in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
Lucas had continued her running career at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. While at FIT she studied Fashion Merchandising and Management and competed in their cross country and track teams.
During her collegiate track career she earned two MVP awards, a VIP award, a Coach’s Award, Student Athlete of the Year in 2016 as well as All American status in both cross country and track. Lucas served as a student coach for her junior and senior years.
While at college, Lucas participated in three half marathons; while studying abroad in Florence, Italy she ran the third half marathon.
Lucas began training for the New York City Marathon this month. The Team V Foundation was founded by ESPN and noted North Carolina basketball coach Jim Valvano. Valvano created the foundation after bring diagnosed with cancer in 1992.
According to Lucas’ sister Paige Lucas, Valvano knew that the research funded by the foundation would come too late to save his life. He dedicated the last few months of his life establishing the foundation.
“This foundation means a lot to her,” Paige Lucas said. “Losing several grandparents, family friends and even finding a small amount of basal cell carcinoma on her face two years ago, she’s so honored to be running for those who have, had or are overcoming their battle with cancer.”
The V Foundation, Victory Over Cancer, has awarded more than $200 million to cancer research and related programs nationwide. According to the foundation they have awarded grants worth $34.6 million to pediatric $33.5 million to Leukemia and Lymphoma, $24.5 million to breast, $19.8 million to lung
Lucas’ goal is to raise more than $3,500 for the foundation.
“26.6 miles is a marathon, not a sprint and with your support she’ll slowly but surely reach her long term goal of completing the marathon in November,” Paige Lucas said.
Sara Lucas will be graduating from The Fashion Institute of Technology in May with an associate’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, a bachelor’s degree in Advertising Marketing Communications with a minor in Economics.
