SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta baseball team easily took their first round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament against Hopatcong on Saturday 15-3.
The game ended early with five Spartans batting 1.000 and three others going .500. The score was 8-0 going into the fourth where Sparta finished it off getting seven across the plate.
Hopatcong came back with three in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to let the game continue past the mercy rule.
Dylan Blendinger, Kenneth Oelkers, Ronan Jarvis and Matt Guerra all scored twice. Guerra took advantage of a walk and getting hit by a pitch, scoring on both trips to first. Oelkers had a triple, Jarvis had two doubles.
Austin Blendinger, Michael Daly, Sebastian Jerome, Cole Patten, Terrence Rippon, Tyler Schaberick and Shane Whalen all scored once. Jerome had two RBIs. Rippon and Sigillo each had a double and contributed two RBI’s.
Jake Zerillo had two RBIs.
Sigillo got the win on four innings work. He had six strikeouts, allowing only two hits and giving up two walks.
Sparta hosts Jefferson on Tuesday in a regular season game. Sparta will face Phillipsburg, number eight seed, on Wednesday for the next round of the H/W/S/ tournament.
