SPARTA, NJ - The Spartans are built on their seniors. With all of the injuries this team has suffered, the main constants have been Nick Lucas, Terrell Smith and Jack Simon. Each had huge nights to stop the three game losing streak and get back on the winning side.
Lucas had 14 points and nine rebounds. The team relies on him to score and defend one of the other team's best shooters. Morris Knolls were undersized throughout the night and relied heavily on guard play. The defense of Lucas and Simon were huge for Sparta. His rebounds helped the team get out of their end.
Terrell Smith was the biggest player on the court and he played like it. He reached over his opponent multiple times to get 16 rebounds. He was reliable with the ball in the high post, scoring eight points, mostly on drives and spins.
Simon had three threes en route to his 14 points. With the guard play of Morris Knolls being their best option, Simon often guarded players looking to score. The trio of guards of Lucas, Simon, and Ben Melville helped slow down the attack of a Morris Knolls team that had 96 points two games ago.
As the Spartan played their first game without senior Devon McIntyre, they welcomed back sophomore point guard Dante Joefield. Joefield's minutes were limited but it was an encouraging sign to see him return before the end of the season. Sparta needs his ball handling and scoring as they close the season.
Morris Knolls had a balanced attack with their leading scorer, Jordan McDaniel, having 10 points. Alec Shea finished with eight points.
The Spartans improve to 14-7 and look for win 15 against Jefferson at home on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
