SPARTA, NJ - On a brisk Fall Sunday morning, people are in their beds or relaxing at home. But a for a special group of young women, Sunday morning means softball and a special way to honor Veteran’s Day. The Black Diamonds 18U team hosted three other softball teams in a one-day round robin tournament at Ungerman field.
Prior to the tournament a ceremony honored many special guests. Veterans and active duty military, members of the Sparta VFW, players and families came together on the field to pay their respects.
Following a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, local veteran Rudy Diaz spoke to the crowd. A $500 dollar donation was made to the local Stay Safe Foundation which helps veterans get the assistance they need both physically and mentally when they come home.
Once the action got underway, the level of softball play made everyone proud to be part of the tournament. Competitive, fast paced and action packed would describe the games and the smiles on everyone’s faces conveyed the joy of being part of a special day for everyone involved.
One Marine veteran at the game expressed the sentiment of the fans. “These young ladies are really getting after it out there.”
When the dust settled, the championship game pitted the home team Black Diamonds against powerhouse Rapid Fire.
A long day did not stop the Black Diamonds from taking home the Championship winning 8-0 in the finals. It was a dominant performance and fitting ending to another successful season for the Black Diamonds.
A summer of wins culminated with a trip to the World Series in Maryland and completing the fall season in this manner was a tribute to these girls and the hard work they put in. Strong pitching, stingy defense and a lineup from top to bottom that generated runs propelled the home team to their final victory of 2019.
One parent summed up the day. “It was a perfect way to salute our veterans and celebrate the girls."
The Black Diamonds organization said they would like to thank their sponsors, families, coaches and fans for their support throughout the year.
